Hindi ba nailipat na yang bahay ni Don Roman Santos sa Antipolo? I think it was the subject of the coffee table book Tahanan. A lot of the interiors are very well preserved. I assume it's because they're still lived in by the original families. I hope they stay that way for a few more generations. The Gabriel house with the rounded corners seems very interesting. Wala ka bang pics ng loob?

yes, the roman santos house was transferred to antipolo, these pictures were taken year 2000 as part of my documentation of malabon and navotas. i intentionally posted it to show how it looked like before it was transferred and to prove that the house is part of the town's legacy.

i have no interior shots of the gabriel house in navotas. im planning to do that one of these days

Hi! Are you from Malabon? I remember this house... it's the house just across our clan's house (Santos), right beside the gas station. No one lives there anymore, though. Spent most of my childhood weekends at Malabon, great memories :) Just hope that Malabon won't give in to subsidence, but it's long been predicted, even before climate change (sea-level rise impact) got hyped up. Thanks for posting the pictures, I'll show them to my mom and my relatives :)

Ross Santos? I'm his first cousin. Were you classmates at St. James? I'll tell him I came across your site! :)

hi derek, i used a canon instamatic camera and scanned them one by one, these pictures were taken year 2000, except for those with dcp names, i used a kodak digital camera circa year 2001.

Wow..my mom told me to check this site coz pics of our house in malabon were posted. Yup I suddenly remember my childhood years in a snap! I grew up here..the firt 13 years of my life. I remember I would always wake up early to go to school as I studied in Ateneo, which is very far from Malabon. Man, I remember playing with the kids there and my cousins (Pascuals)! Thanks for posting these pics...I really miss our lola's house.
kenreodica wrote on Nov 14, '07
Hi there! I'm from Malabon too and I played here at this house every weekend when I was young. This is the house of my cousins (Pascual-Trinidad). They are still living there. I sure miss those days! Maybe you know Joseph or Jaan trinidad..my cousins also studied in St. James and they're the ones that live in this house. Again, thanks for posting these very nice pics of Malabon houses!

I want to see the interior of that house, i have not entered that one. that is the house of former malabon mayor sinfroso pascual right? im happy that you enjoyed the view
jomreyes wrote on Nov 16, '07
I grew up across the street from this house. 234 Gen Luna St. In the 70's the tallest part of the house was struck by lightning and almost burned. This photo had to have taken from the front door of my house.
richardtsb wrote on Nov 17, '07
whose house was that? you grew up near tropicana studio? kaninong family ka? its nice to here from people about this.
jomreyes wrote on Nov 17, '07
My mother's family are from Malabon, my lola is a Rivera and my lolo is a Martin. My lolo's sister founded the Azucena school of fashion. Our house is not that that close to the Tropicana studios, I lived at the corner of A.Mabini and Gen. Luna st. ( bet. Burgos and A. Mabini). We lived next door to the Magnacell battery shop owned by the Salao's. I also went to school in SJA batch '82.Do you still live in Malabon? My uncle Nestor Martin is now living in our old house . This is very cool to comunicate with someone from my home town
richardtsb wrote on Nov 17, '07
Hi, Im batch 88 of st james, that's nice to hear that you are from there. hoping that you can join the advocacy to promote malabon as another heritage town. most people are not aware of it. when i posted this, most got shocked to learn that there are a number of heritage / historic/ cultural structures around town. other than the flood, most had no idea about our place. yes i still and will always stay in malabon

Hi! I am one of the Borja descendants. Thank you so much for featuring the Borja house in your travelogue. It's a well-preserved house. Everything here are in its original state, including the antique grandfather's clock in this photo. The two frames on both sides were school projects done by my aunts when they were students in Centro Escolar de las Senoritas. My 89-year old father would be so happy about your feature. In fact, he grew up in this house. We usually had our reunions here during Christmas and New Year. This was built by his father (Manuel G. Borja, a Spanish mestizo) and mother (Leona Roxas, a Chinese mestiza). I'll tell him about it. Buhayin natin muli ang ganda ng Malabon! More power!

hi stritz,

thank you for that thought. i have always been fascinated by your ancestral house. your cousin nesty became my classmate in st. james, and he was my key to entering your ancestral house. and fortunately they were cooperative. also thank you in advance for helping us in the endeavor to save malabon's heritage.

Hi Richard :-)
You are welcome. These houses only showed how rich our Malabon town was. It's like going back to memory lane. The younger generation have to see these so they can further appreciate and preserve the Malabon culture.I also saw in your album the Paez-Cruz Mausoleum in Bayan. You see, my late mom was related to that side. Your site also links Malabon people and relatives as well. :-)

hey thats my nanay ba's house hehe! im a descendant of Adela Dionisio... its been ages since i last visited the house.. i think last time was 5 years ago.. the house pretty much is still the same but i think some of the interior got destroyed coz of the flood.

hi carlo,

im happy that your relative, pacita dionisio bautista allowed us to enter the house during our last heritage tour of malabon. hoping that you can join us in our endeavor to promote malabon's heritage and that the locals can do something as well to save our hometown.

you can check my links for the tour that we did last october 13

Hi Carlo - very nice work. I lived in the Dionisio home until the late 80's and unfortunately saw the devastion wrought on our culture by the Kapitbahayan project (flooding). Although I am not really sure that the damage accrued over the past decades can be undone, it would really be nice if the photos you've collected can be turned into a coffee table book and the different families can be asked to provide a short writeup about their homes (and other Malabon landmarks). A lot of us are probably scattered all over the world and this would serve as a wonderful reminder of our hometown.

thanks melo, it will be such a pleasure to have an old picture of the martinez house here. the one who now owns the house is a friend of mine.i am rather fortunate to see the house whenever i want to.i also have a 1962 exterior picture of the house. for the longest time, ive wanted to see the house (since the mid 1980's) it was fortunate that your family decided to restore the house in the same period, and it is among the gems of malabon.i have done numerous press reslease about the house as well in philippine television, so that i can promote the town.

curiously, where are the origins of the goco's and martinez's? in my research, they are the only ones in the town.did they come from batangas?like the lunas?

i will be happy to see the old picture. thank you

hi karichi, it was nice to know that you are underwent a study about malabon. i would like to add another angle about the town, contrary or complementary to the usual notion about the town. as the saying goes, kung ano bumuhay sa iyo, iyon din ang papatay sa iyo. Malabon made its wealth from water, and the improper use and neglect of the water ways, it is ruining our place.

it is also nice to know that you dug dipper in understanding the place. thanks and i will be happy to talk about your findings when im in manila

we came from malabon. we lived sa hulong duhat, sa house po ni Ildefonso Santos. I studied at SJA too, but i was in grade 5 noong lumipat kami dito sa batangas. and i think st. ritz is our father's cousin, our tita. I'm a Santos.

Wow, i'm now discovering Malbon's great history. May magandang history pala siya, ngayon-ngayon ko lang nalalaman. :D

Hi! My family lived in Malabon until I was 9 years old, but before that my half brothers decided to relocate in Alabang and QC, so we moved to Paranaque. We used to live in Tenejeros, just a few minutes away from Monumento. I had fond memories there while I was growing up. We used to go to the Tugatog (that's what I remember) or St. Gabriel church to hear mass on Sundays. Sadly, when I came back it seems like every corner of Tenejeros has been commercialized and it lost its charm. I went to St. Scho Manila when I was in grade school and going home to Malabon seemed so hard during rainy days, but I miss it so much.

Great pictures! I want to tour it sometime, just to sort of rediscover it.=)

thanks for reacting, im glad that this material touched the hearts of many. specially those who used to stay in malabon. i have a group who does tours of malabon every time we feel like it. we try to ask the home owners to open the doors for us. also we just wanted malabon to regain its 19th century prestige as you can see in my other posts in the blog section.

what is your family name?

your photos brings a lot of memories. I recognize some of the houses, syempre the garcia house, salao, angel-santos, the raymundo, punzalan, borja..Some, i have to ask my father first kung saan ba yung bahay na iyun.I remember the houses on concepcion, dinadaan namin papuntang SJA. The san bartolome, dampalit and concepcion church. I dont like what they did sa San Bartolome. Nagmukhang cheap. I'll always remember the angels on the sides of the church, sa bandang itaas.

Buhayin natin ang Malabon. Feels like gustong kong bumalik, ayusin yung sira.

hi there, thanks for visiting my malabon site. sorry for not having the Ildefonso Santos house here, ang hirap kasing kunan ng picture. but id love to complete all the houses that i scouted around malabon.

hoping your family will preserve your ancestral house. most specially IP Santos is now national artist.who is the santos in your family, your mom or dad?i always visit lucino santos if i have time, when he was still staying in the old house. ang sarap niyang kausap.

also the setting of your house is so nice, ang gandang i-landscape. IP must do something there.buti pa nga kayo, you still have your ancestral house, ours was torn down in the (malabon house) 1960's and (navotas house)1990's. its so disheartening for me to have lost vestiges of my history.

I hope that we can keep in touch about this and hoping i can meet you if im in manila. you can reach me at richardtsb@gmail.com, i have a group that is making a move to make malabon known again. this time for its heritage, we have so much that people arent aware of. we are conducting tours if we feel like it.

aomeone in your family also contacted my saite and i so happy despite his young age, he has pride about malabon and wanted to save what is left there.

let's keep in touch.

thanks for visiting my site, so kamag-anak mo si rogelio santos yung owner ng cuatro cantos na inuman, and the marcelo- maclan. may classmate ako sa st james, si joy maclan. im happy that my site touched you, and that is my intention for doing this site. im advocating, together with my group to promote malabon, and make people realise that there is more than pancit and the usual notion of baha, we have so much to show that is forgotten, and unknown to many.

hoping sa upcoming tours namin you can join para maging matunog ulit ang malabon the way it was. lalo na yan ano, old family ka ng malabon/navotas. lets keep in touch.

hi maria,
the gabriel house, aka bulabog and the century house is located along m naval street in navotas, after the municipio before reaching the san jose church, it is in between the two sites. ask the people where is the century house, they will know. and you will not miss it if you are in the vicinity. as the original owners, i havent researched about it.

this endeavor will not be possible with out touching the hearts of concerned silent people llike you. thanks for the support.

Hi, I remember this house, the front (its ground floor) of the house used to be a pharmacy "Farmacia Pascual". My eldest brother has a friend who is a Pascual his name is "Ronnie" and whenever they have a basketball game he will passed by our house in Matahong Street and also in our place at C,Arellano St. corner Sigwa St. (beside Standard Cigarette Factory/former Mayor Florante Villegas' house?) and usually I'm the one whom he will see, then he will asked me if my brother is around. I will get my kuya (Sammy Goco) and then he will talked to Ronnie (by now he is about 65 years old). Nice feelings to see the Pascual's house, it brings back happy childhood memories.
By the way Richard , is the Magsimpan;s house (near Pascual's house and across the Iglesia ni Cristo church still standing? The ground floor of that house used to be "Farmacia Magsimpan". Thanks Richard I hope this comment will go through.

im happy that my site touched your spirits, which is the intention of my post, to promote what we have in malabon. yes the dionisio house is still standing and it is among my favourite houses in malabon. it is well kept by your, sister(?) pacita dionisio bautista. ang ganda ganda ng bahay na yon. with all the muebles.

i will be more than happy to see malabon revive its grand past, the old families gathering again, specially christmas reunions in their ancestral houses, or just in malabon.

i miss the old families hearing christmas mass in the old churches. now i feel like a stranger whenever i hear mass before christmas, i dont know anyone of them.

let us keep in touch and make malabon as grand as it was.

yes, it is tonsuya bridge. there was an older bridge there, it was damaged during the second world war, thus replaced/reconstructed according to the image of the older one (with modifications too) built in the 19th century.

hi rich,
there used to be a house right beside the foot of tonsuya bridge (across Tableria Syjueco and before you reach "Filipinas Theatre") going to bayan and that house belongs to Cayco's family. Were you able to take photos of it? I will appreciate it very much if you will give me the addresses of each old houses that you have taken.
the Raymundo's are my distant relatives and i remember Auntie Linda Raymundo who is a Lady Physician, Uncle Dodong Raymundo and his sons rolando and renato if i'm not mistaken, Lolo Jose and Lola Patring. Lolo Jose is also a doctor who worked at culion leper colony i believe.
thanks

hi alex, thanks for visiting this site. what do you mean by any-one related to the pascuals of navotas? are the owners related of those who posted? if it is about the pictures, you have the arsenio pascual, wenceslao pascual, elueterio pascual, sinfroso pascual. basically the pascuals are related to each other. you can link to them upto bataan. for those who posted, i suppose some of them are.

hi, thanks for visiting this site. i had the chance to enter your ancestral house, ever since ive wanted to see that house. to enter that. until i chanced to chat to your tita, melita cayco leviste. and i learned that we are related. your lola is a joson, the sister of my lola's brothers in law (jose and venacio), plus my lola was a joson too. i enjoyed that time to have entered that house.

if i remember it right, you are an aranjuez? my brother is raphael bautista, your batchmate in st. james. im two batch lower (88)

I haven't been home for a long long time but I can tell you it had its own charm back then..very cozy and mysterious...I even slept in the bed of my great grandmother. And you know. may mga super antique photos dyan na alam ko kung saan nakatago.

I spoke to my "Auntie" awhile ago. She hasn't seen this yet so I'll be passing by her home sometime this week to set up her internet. Yes, I am an Aranjuez. I've always believed that the dots connect. How fitting it is for me to see this now. And how equally pleasant to know that we are related.

Guess it's about time I come back home for a visit.

All the pictures were simply amazing. Taga Malabon din po ako, Javier II Street in Baritan. My Mama is the youngest of the cartoonist Jose Zabala and a relative of Nonoy Marcelo of Ikabod. My Papa is from Baritan. Diyan na po ako lumaki pero sa St. Gabriel Academy ako nag-elementary at sa SMACC [OLGA] nag-high school. Congratulations po in your success in informing the public that Malabon, indeed, is a cultural heritage. Naniniwala po ako na malaki ang potential ng Malabon to be one of the best cities in the country. Nasa States na po ako since last year and I am really proud to say na taga-Malabon po ako pag may nakikilalalang kababayan natin. Napakaraming memories in Malabon na tumulong sakin to be hard working, patient, simple and religious in my own ways. I take pride that I hailed from Malabon. Sana mag-tulungan lahat even in their own simple ways. Ung youngest sister ko po ay member ng Lords and Ladies of the Altar Choir ng Conception Church. Miss ko na rin lahat ng relatives ko jan in Javier, Dampalit, Sto. Rosario, Celia Dos, Tugatog at C. Arellano. I plan to help out with the Malabon public library in "Justice". Just imagine kung lahat ng kabataan sa Malabon ay makapagbasa ng mga libro, I am sure na magagamit nila ung knowledge to get high grades to get into good schools and eventually have a successful life. Salamat po ulit and I hope to meet you when I go home soon. ^_^

Hello there. I left Malabon when I was in second year college, I had a hard time commuting from there to UP Diliman because of the increasing traffic and the floodings. I grew up in the house opposite the Zablan house. My grandparent's house used to be just like the Zablan's. I think it was a typical design during those days until my grandparent's decided to renovate because their old house was ruined by termites. I was five years old then. I have loved and adored all the houses you have featured in your blog since I was really young and I was hoping for the longest time that people will wake up and take care of these precious gems. I am now grateful that it seems like my prayers are being answered. My sister and I graduated from ICPS but my brother was from St. James. My maternal Grandparents were both Santoses, They were not related though.

I have a hazy recollection of this but I was told that the the head of the clan, Bernardo I seem to recall, is a freethinker. The "lapida" which is shown beside the statue records an apocryphal dialog between Lucifer and St. Michael. Lucifer argues that with all the injustices and misery in this world, the truth is that it is really he who is prevailing. It actually is a social commentary. The "lapida", I seem to recall was originally mounted in the pedestal. I recall the statue as sited on it own without the backing wall. The grill was added decades ago because the boys playing around the statue were said to be throwing stones at it.

BTW, in the fifties to the sixties when cemetery spaces were not congested, the Malabon gentry will either choose to be buried in the "Bayan" (San Bartolome) Cemetery if they are devout Catholic churchgoers. Those of the more secular or protestant bent are buried in the Tugatog or "Municipal" cemetery. With either, a walking funeral procession is the norm and a brass band is mandatory. Ropes are tied to the front bumpers of funeral car and the mourners walk on either side of the rope. The close family members walk behind the funeral car, en masse, followed by others who prefer to join in with their vehicles, which were mostly "owner" jeeps.

hi richard, wow, nice pictures of the old houses in Malabon. I'm from Dampalit at nakakaawa yung nagiisang old house dun (yellow paint..was it pascual?), kinain na ng tubig.. lalo ngayon na halos hanggang dibdib ang itinaas ng daan.

BTW, do you have any idea if the book of Nonoy Marcelo about Malabon will still push thru? Last time I heard, the manuscripts were finished by Nonoy before he died in October of 2002. Naghahanap pa siguro yung mga descendants nya ng sponsor for the book.

Hi Gladys,

Sorry for the very late reply, ngayon ko lang napuntahan ulit ang account ko.

the malabon book ni nonoy is available na, hindi ako natuwa sa outcome and post production....... Monchet Lucas sold numerous copies. you can ask the Lucases for a copy.

No comment na lang ako sa Local GU. and that is more than enough for a comment.

The house you were saying sa Dampalit, yung kay Mary Pascual-Salao Santos, then go north pa, yung sa mga Cruz din.

Ikot ka pa ng Malabon, madami pa akong hindi naisamang bahay dito.
Thanks

thanks carmela, the help you can do is to be as proud as you are in promoting our town and tell the world about our place. what ever i have started, and what you have done as well will keep the ball rolling in order for us to achieve our goal or making malabon as the grand place that our ancestors made it as to what is is, and to re make that era of granduer.

hi alex, thanks for visiting this site. what do you mean by any-one related to the pascuals of navotas? are the owners related of those who posted? if it is about the pictures, you have the arsenio pascual, wenceslao pascual, elueterio pascual, sinfroso pascual. basically the pascuals are related to each other. you can link to them upto bataan. for those who posted, i suppose some of them are.
try this. http://www.pasqual.org/d1.htm#g1 I'm searching for my Santos roots and i accidentally found this site. this will help you Mr. Alejandro Pascual.

thanks Ron,

Ildefonso Paez Santos Jr is the son of Ildenfonso Santiago Santos who was married to Asuncion Paez. There are a number of Santos family around Malabon, and there are those who carry the same name as well. would your mom know who was her grandmother, wife of Andres? So I can pin point.

Richard

Hello, just to be placed on the record if you do not mind. This was previously owned by the Aguilars, around circa 1860-1940s, a relation of the Gazas, Buensucesos, Gonzales Clan. The Aguilars was prominent family were most of their livelihood was in the casco business. The silong used to be a tabacalera factory and the 2nd floor as a residential area until the house was transferred to the current owners. This house was part of the land the Aguilars owned until the descendants migrated to our cities and countries. The house fronting this bahay na bato is a descendant of the Aguilars. I know, I am own of them.

Hi! It was a nice trip down memory lane to see our ancestral house featured in your site! I've shared a link to my sister and nieces and they were glad to be able to see it as well. This was the window fronting the room I occupied during my 'dalaga' years. This was part of the original house. The part on the left side of the picture was added by my grandparents in the 1930s when their children started marrying off. It was this part that was constructed with a 3rd floor torre. The right side of the picture, during my 'formative'years, was where the 2nd floor sala was. In my childhood, I remember opening the bottom windows (now covered with glass) to peer out the streets and watch the passers-by. Seeing the pictures of the house, I assume you've met my brother Neil before his demise? Some parts were renovated as the years went by. Although it's sad that he didn't finish all the renovations he wanted done to the house, I'd say that he did a pretty good job in its preservation.

Nice shot! This reminds me so much of the annual holiday visits to My Ninang Itang Borja's house. This was one of the old Malabon houses that have been well kept! When she was still alive and well she supervised the maids in their never-ending daily task of cleaning the whole house up to its last nook and cranny.

Hey. My Lolo is Rodolfo Tiango Flores. He was the child of my Great Grandfather Martin Flores and Great Grand Mother Honorata Tiangco. He was supposedly from Malabon. I grew up in Toronto, Canada and I would like to know more about my family's history since I'm visiting the Philippines in late 2012. Do you have any information about the Flores Family??

naiyak naman ako last time na umuwi kami ng Dampalit. The old house from Mary Pascual-Salao Santos was now a history, yes, the yellow house that i'm referring to in my previous post. The house was reduced to a rubble.. sayang! :-(
